From Murray  (from last week)
I am sitting looking at a faded photograph of me outside Sheffield Cathedral at my ordination as Deacon in July 1987. The first thing I am struck by is how much hair I had then (on my head and my face!).  Second is Ann beaming by my side (in a maternity dress as James was on his way!)  I do look delighted to have finally started the work I felt God was calling me to over many years, and to have survived a return to college for three years.
What my new cassock hides is the fact that I am not quite standing straight - as I had a bad back!  The first of several periods of illness which would have been a shock to me at the time had I known of their coming.
Looking back the achievements which mean most are the times when I have helped people to grow into a faith that has sustained them in good times and bad.  I suppose that will have come from the hours spend preparing sermons and preaching, chatting and counselling, but also through the courses I have led like ‘In the Picture’ and ‘Questions! Questions!’  Second has been the difference I have made to buildings, both the restoration work we did at St Nicholas, Thorne and the reordering here at St Paul’s.
There have been so many highlights.  Going on retreat with my vicar, Peter Anderson, up at Lindisfarne when I was newly ordained.  Looking after the young people’s group at St Mary’s Greasbrough (near Rotherham) and taking them away for weekends.  Also visiting the Steel Works as an industrial chaplain and starting a new congregation on one of the estates.
At Thorne I worked with curates Steve (preaching today!), Kevin, who may be here but has had to retire from ministry because of his health, and Jenny.  Steve did a great job easing me into the role as vicar and Kevin was a wonderful foil for me and we wrote ‘In the Picture’ together.
Here in Norton Lees the reordering project was great fun, harder work that I ever imagined – but so very much worth doing!  But another highlight (amongst so many) was my sabbatical when I was able to visit Steve in Dubai and Peter in Cannes and led the retreat at the monastery on the island.
All that I have done has only been possible with the help support, inspiration and encouragement of lots of different people.  But the people to whom I am most grateful are my own family who have put up with me on days when I have been ill and grumpy and often both at once!  Their unfailing loyalty and support have been irreplaceable.
This week!
Thank you so much to everyone who made the service last Sunday so very special.  Ann and I are very grateful for all your kindness, gifts and cards.
