From Murray It was good to be part of the funeral service last week for Betty.  She was an incredible person who crammed a huge amount into her life.  Having retired early as a Head Teacher and after the death of her husband she became deeply involved in the life of St Paul’s as well as persuing her interests in WI, quilting, folk music and caravanning.  She organised Christian Aid collections at St Paul’s and was involved in organising events across the city.  Most moving were the tributes from her family to her love and encouragement, wisdom and humour. She certainly lived out her faith in a very winning way.

DECORATING CHURCH FOR MOTHERING SUNDAY
I am delighted to say that the Cubs and Guides of St. Pauls have agreed to help with the flowers for Mothering Sunday.  We would be very grateful for donations of evergreen foliage to support their efforts.  We are looking for small leaved evergreens & herbs such as hebe, veronica, rosemary, lavender, box, tree ivy with berries etc.  There will be buckets at the back of Church on Sunday 23rd of March to leave your contributions in.
Many thanks for your help, Liz (Edwards)

ST PAUL’S SPRING MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held on Sunday 6th April at 6.00 pm.  Invitations have been sent out to those who have requested them. If you know of anyone who would appreciate an invitation, or just names being read out at the service please ask them to get in touch  with Irene Seggar or ask her for more details or phone 255 1945. We hold this service primarily for the recently bereaved to have an opportunity to remember their loved ones, so if you feel you are now ready to take your name off the list then also please let us know, but it’s also fine to continue coming if you find this service helpful.

FOODBANK UPDATE  Last week 488 kilos of food came in and 260 went out – 26 from St Paul’s – thank you!  There was a new helper and a lady came with her NSPCC worker who is not able to get out much.  Robert invited her to drop in for tea and a bun!

From Murray: Last Friday I went to see an old friend in Cheltenham.  It was a lovely trip on the train with the promise of spring very evident in the daffodils, lambs in the fields and the sheen of bursting buds on the trees.  Choosing the Gold Cup day was not a good move as the station was crowded when I arrived but Hugh drove me to Tewkesbury for lunch followed by a very pleasant look round the Abbey.  It is the largest parish church and bigger than some cathedrals!

Lent Series 2014  - ‘I’m gonna let it shine!’ – Week 2 ‘Equipped to share’

Please come along on Wednesday evening for our Lent Series.  It is really important that as many as possible of us are there!  This week we will be thinking about the gifts God gives to us and how we use them in his service.

From Murray (an update of last week piece!)

The season of Lent is an important one in the church’s year.  It is a time of sharing with Jesus as he fasted in the desert.  I will pick up that theme at Family Worship today and show some pictures I took of the desert in Dubai.

People often give something up for Lent.  This year Ann and I will be giving up some time to look at a study course together – this, we hope, will deepen our faith and draw us together at the same time.  I hope you will be giving up time to attend our Lent Series ‘I’m gonna let it shine’.  You may want to do something else as well.  Some people read a Lent book, others take more time to pray and read the bible.  Mike and I have shared with you at our 10 am service two different ways we have found helpful in letting God speak to us through the bible – why not try these out and find out which works best for you.  Whatever you do, don’t miss out on this important season in the church’s year, the more you prepared through Lent the greater will be your joy when Easter comes!

FOOD BANK UPDATE On Friday although there were fewer clients there were a number of visitors.  A worker from South Yorkshire Housing Association, a charity well aware of the problems people are facing, came. SYHA supports one of the volunteers.  A representative from the Sheffield Credit Union brought information which can be given to clients - this was well timed as one client had nearly taken out a loan from a well-known loan company, with very high interest rates,  but fortunately didn't. The other visitor was from Ontario who said her church had been running a food bank for twenty years.

Prayer Focus:  We continue to pray for all who are bereaved or are ill and those who care for them

Food Bank  Give thanks for the Credit Union, CAB and SYHA. Pray for a solution to be found now that Gleadless Valley Forum no longer feels able to give food bank vouchers. As they are primarily an advice centre, giving vouchers was leading to a conflict of interest. Pray too for the client who would like to volunteer at food bank but will struggle to afford the bus fare.
