Lent Series
2014 - ‘I’m gonna let it shine!’ – Week 2
‘Equipped to share’
Please
come along on Wednesday evening for our Lent Series. It is really important that as many as
possible of us are there! This week we
will be thinking about the gifts God gives to us and how we use them in his
service.
From
Murray (an
update of last week piece!)
The
season of Lent is an important one in the church’s year. It is a time of sharing with Jesus as he
fasted in the desert. I will pick up
that theme at Family Worship today and show some pictures I took of the desert
in Dubai.
People
often give something up for Lent. This
year Ann and I will be giving up some time to look at a study course together –
this, we hope, will deepen our faith and draw us together at the same time. I hope you will be giving up time to attend
our Lent Series ‘I’m gonna let it shine’.
You may want to do something else as well. Some people read a Lent book, others take
more time to pray and read the bible.
Mike and I have shared with you at our 10 am service two different ways
we have found helpful in letting God speak to us through the bible – why not
try these out and find out which works best for you. Whatever you do, don’t miss out on this
important season in the church’s year, the more you prepared through Lent the
greater will be your joy when Easter comes!
CHRISTIAN AID: MAY DAY TREK - MONDAY 5th MAY
As part of St. Paul’s fund-raising for Christian Aid Week (11-17
May), we will once again be participating in the Sheffield May Day Trek. This
year, it will be a new route of 5 miles starting and finishing at Bent’s Green
Methodist Church. If you would like to take part or you would like further
details, please talk to Peter Franklin or e-mail to peter@franklinphsl.plus.com
CHRISTIAN AID: STREET COLLECTION – 12th
- 16th MAY
Also part of our fund-raising for CA Week, we will once again be
doing door to door collections for selected streets in our parish. Last year
this raised over £800 and so is an important element of our fund-raising. If
you would like to help, please speak to Helen Franklin or e-mail to helen@franklinphsl.plus.com

Songs of Praise) on May 14th at 7.00 pm at Central
United Reformed Church, 60 Norfolk Street , celebrating 300 years of worship on
this site. Tickets - £5 each. See poster in church for contact details.
FOOD BANK UPDATE On Friday although there were fewer clients there were
a number of visitors. A worker from South Yorkshire Housing Association,
a charity well aware of the problems people are facing, came. SYHA supports one
of the volunteers. A representative from the Sheffield Credit Union
brought information which can be given to clients - this was well timed as one
client had nearly taken out a loan from a well-known loan company, with very high
interest rates, but fortunately didn't. The other visitor was from
Ontario who said her church had been running a food bank for twenty years.
M.U. - MAKE A MOTHER’S DAY – Sun 30th March. As you remember your mother, help us to
change the lives of people all over the world by buying a “Make a Mother’s Day”

Food
Bank Give thanks for the Credit Union, CAB and SYHA. Pray
for a solution to be found now that Gleadless Valley Forum no longer feels able
to give food bank vouchers. As they are primarily an advice centre, giving
vouchers was leading to a conflict of interest. Pray too for the client who
would like to volunteer at food bank but will struggle to afford the bus
fare.
