Strange Art at the Cathedral!

From 23rd to 28th July there will be an artistic installation called a Luminarium in the forecourt of Sheffield Cathedral which looks most intriguing!  It is perhaps a bit like a huge bouncy castle which you walk through! - made of plastic and held up by air pressure, you take off your shoes and wander through the wonderfully coloured tubes and domes.  Though a piece of art it is also supposed to be a spiritual experience and there will be an act of worship and pilgrimage there at 7.30 pm on Sunday 24th July.  It cost £3.50 to go around and looks to be quite an experience!

UPDATING OUR PARISH LIST Please check the list at the back of church and correct your contact details if necessary. If you are happy to be contacted by email please add your email address beside your telephone number. Thank you

TEDDY BEARS PICNIC next Saturday 23rd July from 2 – 4 pm for children 0-5 and their families. Christian story teller, face painting and music etc.  Venue – Hillsborough Park or if wet, at Hillsborough Methodist Trinity Church opposite the bowling green using the Dorothy Rd entrance. Tel. 2494182

AFTERNOON TEA & ENTERTAINMENT at Holy Trinity Church Hall, Grove Rd, Millhouses on Wed 24th Aug from 2 - 4.00pm. Cost £3 to go to MU project work. It is an open event for anyone and is always pleasant, so please support it. I have tickets & members, I need some cakes please! Thanks – Jacqui

FOCUS FELLOWSHIP will not be meeting in The Old Vestry on Mondays throughout August.  Focus Fellowship resumes on Monday 5th September. There will be no Focus Service in church on Sunday 7th Aug.

THE BISHOP’S GARDEN PARTY More news!

M.U. raised £880.32 in total, over £200 more than last year. Ecclesall Deanery raised over £160 from sales of toiletries, so thanks to all who helped out. The entry fee, refreshments and hook-a-duck took a total of £1,300 to be shared between M.U. and The Archer Project. Bishop Steven has now given M.U. a further £650 to be divided between AFIA (Away from it all) and a Prison Play Area project. A grand total of £1,530.32 for M.U. causes is a brilliant result!

From Murray

(From last week) I am sorry to have to let you know that David Ndoda has died.  We have not had much news from the Shelter of Hope in Zimbabwe for some time, as Sheila and Dave are not able to get over very often.  We gather that earlier this year David was taken into hospital and was found to have cancer  which had spread,  and was by then inoperable, so he then went to a nursing home to be cared for in the last weeks of his life.  David was 86 and people have been amazed that he has been able to carry on working at the Shelter for so long.

I am keeping in touch with Sheila and Dave and with Philip Walshaw to see how the manager, Meli Ngwenya, manages without David who was so much part of the life and work of the Shelter.

This week I am going on a retreat!  I have not been on one for some years because of my illness and the difficulty of getting to the sort of places where they run retreats.  This one is at Whirlow Grange, so very easy to get to and I know they can cope with my funny diet.

We arrive on Monday afternoon and will be silent from Monday evening through to Friday lunchtime.  During this time we will have short sessions with Graham Piggott the retreat leader as well as short acts of worship throughout the days.

I have missed having these times of prolonged silence when I can reconnect with God in a deeper way – please pray that I will be open to hear the things God has for me during this special time!

Silent retreats may not be everyone’s cup of tea but I find them very important and can look back on those I have attended in the past as turning points in my life with God.  The space the silence creates can be deeply joyful and at other times an opportunity to face more uncomfortable feelings which we might otherwise shy away from.  Having faced things in this safe space with God they are never quite the same again.
