From Murray
I had a great time on my retreat last week staying at St Oswald’s Pastoral Retreat Centre at Sleights near Whitby.  The nuns were in a bit of a fluster as they had only just got back from their summer chapter meeting when they all get together (I did not gather where), so they were not ‘habited up’ and were meeting for only two of their usual four daily services.  You might be wondering what nuns wear when they are not in their habits and the answer is very simply, ordinary clothes!
The house is usually closed to visitors over the summer months but I was allowed to go after my first retreat was cut short by my aunt’s illness.  I stayed in one of the three self-catering rooms they have which have a spacious main room plus shower room and kitchenette.  Next door to me was Richard a vicar from Chester Diocese who I chatted to on the first and last day, but we agreed to be silent in between!
Last time I went I had been in the room Richard used, but this time I was in the next room along, which was much nicer has it had a wonderful view.  Richard’s room has a view, but there is a tree in the way which is a bit annoying, where as I could set up my easy chair and the table where I had my meals so that I had this wonderful view all to myself.  I did not even have to walk to a summer house to do my contemplation!
It was so good to have time to reflect back on my experiences over the last month or so.  When you are being silent it seems to free your mind to think deeper and not be distracted by the hurly burly of other things.  So I mulled over things from the past and things which are coming up but was also alert to God’s whispers of direction for how I should use my time and what my priorities should be.
The wonderful surroundings certainly helped, so did the peaceful and prayerful atmosphere of the centre.  It was good to be caught up in the reading of the bible and the saying of the psalms which are at the heart of the nun’s rhythm of life.  The best thing was being able to drive over to Runswick Bay and soak up the amazing view!  It was just glorious in the sunshine.
